Excerpts from a review of Martin's concert with the Hallé Orchestra conducted by Mark Elder in Manchester on 19 October:
"It's not an easy task to play the Mendelssohn concertos, both having been eclipsed by later works. Sturfält and Elder between them established the energy and expressive impact which our Victorian forebears found so powerful. The concerto calls for real technical brilliance, too, which Sturfält has in abundance. It was a masterly performance." (Robert Beale in Manchester Evening News)

Marie Macleod and Martin have been invited by the Kirkman Concert Society to play an evening recital in London's Purcell Room on the 14 June 2005!

14 Jan 2005
Excerpts from reviews of Martin's duo recital with Marie Macleod in London's Purcell Room 12 January:
"Macleod and Sturfält were powerfully eloquent in Lutoslawski's Grave, sombre yet dexterous in Magnus Lindberg's Moto, and managed to make James MacMillan's over-long Second Cello Sonata sound like one of the most riveting things ever written." (Tim Ashley in The Guardian)
"The musical substance of the evening was supplied by the cellist Marie Macleod and the pianist Martin Sturfält, who began with Lutoslawski’s dark and moody Grave. Macleod produces rich tone, but she is also a gutsy, communicative player never afraid of digging in: Moto is one of Magnus Lindberg’s most virtuosic pieces and she rose to its special challenges. Both players were also strong in Huw Watkins’s impassioned, post-Romantic Cello Sonata, and they did all that was required in James MacMillan’s aggressive and gaudy Cello Sonata No 2." (John Allison in The Times)
